PARTNERS IN DEVELOPMENT

CANADIAN HIGH COMMISSION

Over fifteen years ago, Canadian Studies in India began to emerge as a separate programme from Commonwealth Studies have expanded from a limited interest in two or three universities in 1981 to Canadian Studies Centres and Programmes at 15 universities with growing interest in several other institutions for higher learning. One of Canada's largest publicity-supported academic exchange programme in India, permitting Canadian and Indian scholars to study in one another's countries. Each year, over 30 researches travel from one country to the other, thanks to programmes administered by the Shastri Indo-Canadian Institute and supported with funds from both the Indian and Canadian governments.

The Canadian High Commission has encouraged and supported the introduction of Canadian Studies in India, the establishment of Canadian Studies Centres and Programmes, and exchange between scholars, students and institutions. One Canadian official along with an assistant looks after the Academic Relations programme. High Commission representatives, including the Canadian High Commissioner Deputy High Commissioner and other officers regularly attend seminar and conference on Canadian Studies at various institutions throughout India. Calls on academic institutions, lectures at Canadian Studies Centres or other interactions with students and scholars are regular features of official travel throughout India. The Annual International Canadian is one of the sponsors of this event, it organizes the Travelling Books Display on Canadian Studies and represents the Government of Canada at the Conference.
