PARTNERS IN DEVELOPMENT
THE INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL FOR CANADIAN STUDIES
The International Council for
Canadian Studies (ICCS) is a registered non-profit organisation of national
and multinational associations devoted to the advancement of Canadian Studies.
It was established in 1981 by representatives from Australia and New Zealand,
Canada, France, the German-speaking countries, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the
United Kingdom and the United States. Membership now includes 30 member associations
and two associate members, organisations which although not eligible for full
membership benefit from their relation with the Council. The ICCS newsletters,
distributed to all members of ICCS member associations and associate members,
reaches over 6000 individuals or institutions worldwide.
The Council is a federation of Canadian Studies associations. Any national
or multinational Canadian Studies Group, anywhere in the world, may apply
for membership. The ICCS has associate members: Canadian Studies centres or
organisations which, although not eligible for full membership, benefit from
their relation with the Council. Individuals are not eligible for membership
in the Council.
The mandate of the ICCS is to promote scholarly study, research, teaching
and publications about Canada, in all disciplines and in all countries, and
to enhance communication among its members in order to facilitate and develop
such activities. To this end, the council organizes international conferences,
publishes information material, administers programmes on behalf of government
departments and agencies, and devotes a large portion of its resources to
liaison and communication.
