CALL FOR PAPERS
INDIAN ASSOCIATION FOR CANADIAN STUDIES
XXII IACS INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
ON CANADIAN STUDIES

DATES :January 27-29, 2006
THEME :Traditions and Transformations: Canada and India
HOST : Madras University Chennai-600005

The histories of Canada and India have been one of contiguities of traditions. The very nature of the socio-political reality of modern Canada and India as nations of many cultures and aspirations, their expectations of a civil space in their countries, of equal opportunity and dignity of existence has thrown up many challenges. Such a context has resulted in a constant transformation of democratic institutions as well as demagogic expectations. The hall mark of any modern nation is its ability to constantly revitalize itself in relation to global needs by adopting a dynamic posture consistent with its political aspirations and cultural expediencies. Tradition is the ambience of a society that shelves conservative ideologies for whatever is impelling towards a future of self-sufficiency. Transformations are the resultant milestones of achievements as evidenced in a variety of societal and intellectual manifestations.

Given such an understanding it becomes imperative for us to take stock of the manner in which such dual principals are activated and configured in the two societies. The conference at Chennai will aim at taking stock of the manner in which intellectuals have developed viable discourses on the two seminal issues in both Canada and India since 1950. Papers are invited on all areas of the humanities and social sciences addressing either Canadian or comparative themes in nature, to the issues that concern both Canada and India. The papers may approach the theme from such sub-themes as changing jurisprudence, conservative societies and economic realities, social theories of the urban and the cosmopolitan, environmental degradation, native Indian traditions and development strategies, technological imperatives and communication theories, as well as diasporic and new literatures in changing societies. It is hoped that the conference will introduce new areas of discourses in all disciplines. Special attention will be paid to provide pivotal sessions to Quebecois, Francophone studies and research students' sessions.
